Looking for an irrigation meter? It is complicated, but can be easy. Each water purveyor has a different way of processing irrigation meters. However, all of them require an irrigation meter permit. This permit should be obtained by your irrigation contractor. The irrigation meter permit number is usually needed to give to the water purveyor.

So, the local government issues the irrigation meter permit, but the local water purveyor installs the meter. That is why this process is so confusing – because you need to deal with 2 separate entities. The good news is that your irrigation contractor should be able to help you.

What Questions Should I Ask About A New Irrigation System?

Here is what you need to ask your contractor about your new irrigation system:

Are you a licensed, insured, and bonded irrigation contractor?

Have you obtained an irrigation permit?

Is the license holder a regular employee or just a person you buy permits from?

What type of coverage do you provide? The correct answer is head to head AND matched precipitation! This means that the water is applied evenly. 100% coverage just means it is wet, but can be uneven.

What kind of warranty do you offer? Be sure their warranty is at least one year.

Do you have liability insurance and workers compensation?

What type of material? Make sure they do not buy what is on sale. The material should all be the same brand.

Make sure they do not mix rotors and sprays. Make sure they install rain senors and backflow prevention devices. Make sure pipes are buried 8 inches deep for 1 inch and smaller. Make sure they call in locates.

Check the cost of the system.

What should a new irrigation system consist of? A controller, rain sensor, backflow device (RPZ) pipe, flex pipe, rotors, and spray heads. Rotors and spray heads should never be mixed together. Heads should be spaced for head to head coverage. This means that a 15 foot head should be spaced every 15 feet. It is officially spring time. So, get out your gloves and start planting. Please get literature on the plant material before you install it. Make sure the plant is planted in the RIGHT spot in your lawn. The old saying is “Right Plant / Right Place”. If you install your plants where they are happiest, they will grow and thrive. If you keep planting something every year in the same spot and it always dies, try something different. If it is the right plant / right place, you probably have a watering issue.

I Can Water My Lawn 2 Times a Week!!

Yes, you can water your lawn twice a week, but know that you should not. You only need 3.33 inches of water in March, including rain. So, subtract rainfall from 3.33 inches and that is how much you need to irrigate this month. I think you will find that 1 time per week is plenty right now. I know my lawn and landscape looks great and I am hardly watering it at all right now.

Only feed your lawn and landscape what it needs, just like a person. Overfeed a person and they will get unhealthy, over water your Orlando lawn and landscape and it will get unhealthy as well.

Only give your lawn what it needs.

So, you want a reclaim water meter? Some people confuse a reclaim meter with an irrigation meter. An irrigation meter is used to measure potable water that you do not pay sewer on. A reclaim meter measures sewer water that is treated and then sent out for irrigation purposes. However, not everyone can get a reclaimed water meter. The reclaimed water must be in your area to have it available. If it is, get it and use it. If not, then try an irrigation meter.

An irrigation meter is an additional water meter installed by your utility company to keep you from paying sewer charges on water that you irrigate with. If you pay for city sewer, an irrigation meter could save you a bunch of money on your irrigation water.

If you have a septic and drain field, an irrigation meter will not help you. If you have a well or reclaimed water, it will not help you either.

Take a look at your water bill and if you are paying sewer on water you are irrigating with, call the utility company and see about an irrigation meter. Make sure it will save you money. Then, call us to hook it up for you.

Yes, it is time to adjust our clocks for daylight savings time! That means you can run your Orlando irrigation system 2 times per week. But, don’t do it! Keep watering 1 time per week until the lawn starts to look dry. However, as soon as the lawn or landscape starts to show stress from lack of water, add the second day of watering . Why? To save MONEY!

Water costs money, so save water and save money. Watering your Orlando lawn only when needed will keep your lawn healthy and help to control weeds. Only water what you need and you will be happy. Use the extra day only when you need it.

Yep, it’s time to wake up your sprinkler system from its winter slumber. Go outside, turn on each zone, and adjust the sprinkler heads accordingly. Replace the leaking heads and minimize overspray. If you are going to replace sod or landscape, make sure you have good coverage. If you are replacing the same thing again, you have a problem. Either you have the wrong type of plant, the wrong place that you are putting the plant, or a watering issue.
