I know that it just froze this week and that it may freeze again soon. So, keep an eye on your irrigation in Orlando. We do not want it to get away from us. Make sure you run your Orlando irrigation system a little to keep the heads lubricated. Make sure you keep it working and do not leave broken sprinkler heads. This will allow dirt to get into the piping and create new problems. Don’t ignore your irrigation, you will need it soon.

How much water do you need after a freeze? The answer is shocking – NONE! The lawn and landscape just went dormant. Therefore, it is not growing and does not need water. All you need to do with your Orlando irrigation system is keep the heads lubricated and the soil moist. That’s all! When the temperatures rise again, your Orlando lawn and landscape will grow and you will need to water it then.

As of now, I would recommend 3 minutes on the sprays and 9 minutes on you rotors (or 10% on your seasonal adjust). I do not recommend watering your Orlando lawn when it freezes because of the slipping hazard.

It’s cold here in Orlando! What should you do for your Orlando lawn and landscape? Well, there isn’t much you can do. But, you can cover your plants that are not cold tolerant. There will be frost damage on your turf, but don’t worry too much because everything is going to be dormant.

Also, you can cover your irrigation pipes that are above ground. Or, run some water. Keeping the water flowing and moving will prevent it from freezing. In order for irrigation pipes to freeze, it needs to be below freezing for hours. The number of hours depends on how cold it is. Generally, it takes more than 4 hours of freezing weather.

Good luck, and if you need any help with your Orlando irrigation system, call us at 407-275-0804.

The MP Rotator is being sold as a water saving device. A lot of salespeople are retrofitting existing systems with MP Rotators to make the system seem more efficient.

Well, don’t be fooled by the salespeople because these MP Rotators are not the next new thing. They are better in a few ways, but only a limited few. MP Rotators help when you have rotors and sprays mixed. You can install the MP Rotators in place of the sprays and increase the uniformity of the system.

Problems with the MP Rotator:

It takes a certain volume of water to apply half an inch of water to a lawn. It does not matter how you apply the water, just that the lawn gets the water.

MP Rotators are more fragile than the regular rotor head and they are more expensive than a rotor or a spray.

Switching to an MP Rotator will increase the run times. The MP Rotator applies water so slowly that it needs to run for between 40 minutes to an hour to apply half an inch of water. MP Rotators must run longer than sprays and about the same as rotors.

MP Rotators are less durable than the rotors or sprays. You will replace MP Rotators faster than the regular heads.

MP Rotators are a sales tactic for the manufacturer and the salesman. The only time MP Rotators seam to work best is when you have rotors and sprays mixed. If you have rotors and sprays mixed, the MP Rotator is a good way to fix the irrigation system without a major renovation. However, don’t get caught up in the salesman’s smoke and mirrors.

Thanks,

Plants and Sod do not waste water, PEOPLE DO! That’s right, most of us waste water.

Last night, temperatures in Orlando dropped to the 40’s. During the month of December, plants and sod need less than 2 inches of water. That’s half an inch of water per week, watering one time per week or less. Most likely LESS!

Instead of wasting water this month, turn back the water if you can. Save the water for the summer months when your plants and sod actually need it.

If you have an inefficient irrigation system, fix it and save water. Do not mix rotors and sprays. Remember, sprays should run 3 times less often than rotors.

At Bruce Hage Irrigation in Orlando,we are the irrigation and sprinkler experts. If you need advice on how much to water this month, give us a call at 407-275-0804.

As always, Keep it green.

We just set our clocks back an hour and now it is time to turn your Orlando irrigation controllers back. Yes, now we’re only watering on the weekends. Here are some of the watering restrictions:

Odd addresses water on Saturday and even addresses are Sunday only.

No watering between 10 AM and 4 PM.

This month I would say keep watering half the amount per week. That should be about 20 minutes on the sprays and 1 hour on the rotors as long as you have a good system. If you see dry spots, you have an irrigation issue. We only need 2.5 inches of water in November and under 2 inches for December, January and February. In March, we’ll be back up to 3 inches.

Set you controller only for the weekend and if you have a dry spot, give us a call at 407-275-0804. We are the Orlando Irrigation and Sprinkler experts.

It is really not water restrictions. It’s not even irrigation restrictions. It’s actually just what we need. If you are applying 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of water per irrigation cycle once a week, that’s all a healthy lawn and landscape need. If your lawn or landscape needs to be watered more than once a week in November, it’s either because of new material or your lawn is unhealthy. Sod and plants are like people. If you feed them too much, they will become unhealthy. Even if they look good and fat, they can be sickly.

The winter is a great time to save water and make sure your Orlando irrigation system is efficient. A fully operational but poor irrigation system will give you dry spots and make it seem like you need more water.

This is how I winterize my Orlando irrigation system:

Simply put, I stop watering so much. Last year I installed a Solar Sync to my irrigation system. The Solar Sync made my Hunter Pro C controller a Smart controller.

The Solar Sync re adjust my runtimes according to the weather. It automatically increases and decreases my runtimes. It knows how hot or cold it is, and if it is sunny or cloudy. It has a rain sensor and a freeze sensor. I just make sure it doesn’t get out of wack with the power issues we sometimes experience in Florida.

The best time to install a smart controller is now the beginning of the winter. If you install it in the summer you will see a higher water bill. Install it in the winter you will see an annual savings.

The best part is, If you have a Hunter Pro C it only costs an additional $250 for the Solar Sync plus installation. That is the cheapest Smart Controller you can find.

Call Bruce Hage irrigation at 407-275-0804 to learn more about this service and how you can get it now.

There are a few thing you should know about your Orlando sprinkler system as it ages. It gets OLD. It is plastic and rubber. Plastic gets brittle and rubber dry rots. Some systems start having issues after only 5 years old. Some last as long as 20. The biggest difference seems to be the amount of dirt or sand on and around the sprinkler.

If the head is in sod like is should be, they last longer. If they are in sand with no vegetation, they are more likely to expire prematurely. On new installs on sand, heads can stick up out of the box!

So in conclusion, a nice lawn will actually help your sprinklers last longer. Funny, the sprinklers are there to make the lawn nice!
