Winterizing Water Restictions

It’s not really water restrictions. It’s just what you need, and no extra water.

We just set our clocks back an hour and now it is time to turn your Orlando irrigation controllers back. Yes, now we’re only watering on the weekends. Here are some of the watering restrictions:

  • Odd addresses water on Saturday and even addresses are Sunday only.
  • No watering between 10 AM and 4 PM.

This month I would say keep watering half the amount per week. That should be about 20 minutes on the sprays and 1 hour on the rotors as long as you have a good system. If you see dry spots, you have an irrigation issue. We only need 2.5 inches of water in November and under 2 inches for December, January and February. In March, we’ll be back up to 3 inches.

Set you controller only for the weekend and if you have a dry spot, give us a call at 407-275-0804.  We are the Orlando Irrigation and Sprinkler experts.

Water Restrictions

It is really not water restrictions. It’s not even irrigation restrictions. It’s actually just what we need. If you are applying 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of water per irrigation cycle once a week, that’s all a healthy lawn and landscape need. If your lawn or landscape needs to be watered more than once a week in November, it’s either because of new material or your lawn is unhealthy. Sod and plants are like people. If you feed them too much, they will become unhealthy. Even if they look good and fat, they can be sickly.

The winter is a great time to save water and make sure your Orlando irrigation system is efficient. A fully operational but poor irrigation system will give you dry spots and make it seem like you need more water.

Remember, sod and plants do not waste water. PEOPLE DO!

Florida Winterization of an Irrigation System

This is how I winterize my Orlando irrigation system:

Simply put, I stop watering so much. Last year I installed a Solar Sync to my irrigation system. The Solar Sync made my Hunter Pro C controller a Smart controller.

The Solar Sync re adjust my runtimes according to the weather. It automatically increases and decreases my runtimes. It knows how hot or cold it is, and if it is sunny or cloudy. It has a rain sensor and a freeze sensor. I just make sure it doesn’t get out of wack with the power issues we sometimes experience in Florida.

The best time to install a smart controller is now the beginning of the winter. If you install it in the summer you will see a higher water bill. Install it in the winter you will see an annual savings.

The best part is, If you have a Hunter Pro C it only costs an additional $250 for the Solar Sync plus installation. That is the cheapest Smart Controller you can find.

Old Sprinkler Systems

There are a few thing you should know about your Orlando sprinkler system as it ages. It gets OLD. It is plastic and rubber. Plastic gets brittle and rubber dry rots. Some systems start having issues after only 5 years old. Some last as long as 20. The biggest difference seems to be the amount of dirt or sand on and around the sprinkler.

If the head is in sod like is should be, they last longer. If they are in sand with no vegetation, they are more likely to expire prematurely. On new installs on sand, heads can stick up out of the box!

So in conclusion, a nice lawn will actually help your sprinklers last longer. Funny, the sprinklers are there to make the lawn nice!

Winterizing Your Florida Irrigation System

Good News! There isn’t too much winterizing to do in Central Florida. For the most part, the irrigation system could be used at anytime in Central Florida. It is not uncommon to have temperatures in the 80’s during a Florida Winter.

If we have a severe period of freezing in Orlando, you may want to cover your pump or Backflow Preventor like you would cover your landscape. Keep in mind, do not blow out irrigation lines with air or drain the sprinkler system. If you did winterize your Orlando sprinkler system, you may have to do it more the twice to keep up with the heat.

If we can help call, Bruce Hage Irrigation at 407-275-0804. We’ll take care of your Orlando irrigation and sprinkler needs.

Cooling Off

It’s beginning to cool off-time to start reducing irrigation run times and/or frequency.

I would recommend running the irrigation much less than normal. At my home, I am already down to running the irrigation once a week. The lawn and landscape look great. If you have an ET system you should be around 25% RUN TIMES.

If you have not adjusted the total run time to a lower amount, do it now. With this cool weather, all you are going to do is waste water and your money. Save your water and money for next summer when you need it.

If we can be of any help, please call us at 407-275-0804.  We are the Orlando Irrigation experts for all things sprinkler and sodding related.

Do You Want a Smart Controller?

First things first.  A smart controller will adjust the run times of your Orlando irrigation system according to weather. They are affordable and you may already have some of the equipment right now!

Generally, your irrigation system will us a lot less water in the winter and a lot more water in the summer. Over a years time , you will see a savings of spending on water.

The best time to install a smart controller is during the cool months so the landscape and sod get accustomed to less water. If you have a Hunter Pro C, you can add a Solar Sync to it for $250 plus labor. The Solar Sync will enable your Pro C to be a Smart Controller.

If you want a smart controller, give us a call at Bruce Hage Irrigation 407-275-0804.

How Do I Winterize My Sprinklers?

In Central Florida, it is not necessary to winterize your irrigation system. It is more than likely that you will need to use the system during the Florida winter. It is common to need irrigation about 2 times per month. Yes, only twice a month. Our ET (evapotranspiration) rate is below 2 inches per month in December, January and February.

The bottom line is that there is no real winter in Central Florida. You will need your Orlando irrigation system at some point. Just keep the water use low and save the water for the summer.

Crooked Heads?

No, not like a burglar or a politician. Examples of normal wear-and-tear on an Orlando irrigation system are heads becoming crooked, sideways, or out of plumb.

This distorts the way the water is projected out of the head and causes a functioning head to deliver water incorrectly. What can you do to fix it? Just get a shovel dig up the sprinkler head and manually make it straight again. It’s not really that hard, but it must be done.
